1. What three periodicals did you choose?
I chose, Time, American Bar Association, and Journal of Comparative Psychology for my three periodicals.
2. Name three articles, one from each of the three journals you chose.
The three articles that I chose were: "The Trouble With Talking to Iran" in Time, "What's New in the Law" from American Bar Association, and "Standardizing Electric Shocks for Rats" in Journal of Comparative Psychology.
3. What are the major differences among these articles?
The difference that I noticed in the articles were that article from the Journal of Comparative Psychology was an article based off of an actual lab experiment, while the other were more like magazine articles that I am accustom to seeing.
4. What are the major differences among these periodicals?
One major difference that I noticed in the three periodicals was the way that the articles were written. Time magazine was more directed at the general public, and was written so that most anyone could understand it. The American Bar Association was written more oriented for adults, or mature readers, and the Journal of Comparative Psychology was more written for individuals who were either psychologists, or pursuing a degree in psychology.

Regarding the differences among periodicals, your observations are correct. As you continue in your college career, you will become more familiar with the scholarly journal articles--the research, references, etc. and the fact that they are peer-reviewed.
ReplyDeleteYou clearly now how to refine your search terms, but instead of "Hurricane Katrina affect on the economy in United States 2008," you might want to cut out the 'little' words next time and enter something like this:
Hurricane Katrina
AND economic impact
AND United States
AND 2008
I say this, in spite of the fact that you found something useful, because there may be cases where your method of structuring search terms will not yield results.
As for evaluation, relevance is a key criterion, but it's important to remember that they are also authoritative because the journals are carefully chosen, as are the articles within them, which is very different from the Web.
Academic Search Premier: In this case, you got very different results. This is a good way to learn about the differences you encounter from database to database.
